For The Soul

What do we hear in the airwaves nowadays? Songs about sex, drugs, violence and petty stuff, isn’t it? It’s really kinda sad that over the years, people especially the music listeners don’t have much or should I say, a better choice of songs they should listen to. From flirting to hating, from loving to killing, there’s not much difference in the message being relayed by the musicians and artists of the past generations. Broken hearted people reminisce or cry even more when they hear a lousy sad line from a mushy love track. Or depressed people find themselves even worthless upon hearing an “emo” song which could possibly influence them to commit suicide, start a riot, and to kill others. But despite of all these odds, God truly knows that this generation needs something big, something positive, and worth listening to. Thank God for the music, real music that is! It feeds our souls, it encourages, teaches, and gives hope.

It’s not something that we hear on almost  every radio frequency, neither it’s something that tops in the billboard music charts. No. It’s not as popular as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna, or the Pussycat Dolls. But there’s SOMETHING in this music that differs from all the rest! It speaks life, power, healing, faith, joy, and the great love of Jesus for us. Definitely, Christian music has gone a long way already. When some hear the word “Christian”, most people think it’s boring, foolishness, and no fun at all. Well I don’t think so! The emergence of Christian artists is slowly changing this perception. Artists like Casting crowns, Third Day, Toby Mac, Mercy Me, Switchfoot, Planet Shakers, Hillsong and a lot more, are very much on the roll right now, spreading a very powerful message through positive music. Their songs are not just plain songs that you could listen to. They give a positive outlook in life and the lyrics don’t just stuck to our ears, but into the very depths of our sobbing hearts. So if you’re sick and tired of the old music pattern, try something new, get into something big, and listen to something foolish, like how this world calls it...

Missin' the 90's

...and the Eraserheads! They are no doubt, the biggest and the most influential rock band, the Philippines has ever had. I started listening to their music back in 1994 when my cousins and I really appreciated and understood what Pinoy music is all about. From "Toyang" to "Pare Ko", "LIgaya" and "Tindahan ni Aling Nena", and of course their biggest hits "Magasin" and "Ang Huling El Bimbo" which introduced their stardom to the rest of Asia when they won in the MTV Asia Awards, I could say their music has become a part of my life and to almost every Filipino in today's generation. people couldn't get enough of their songs, that even some of their hits are being revived by today's Pinoy artists. Just like any other stories, there's a sad part on this. When Ely Buendia surprisingly left the band, it definitely saddened the whole Philippine music industry and most of all the fans. I'm not really sure of the reason why Ely decided to take that action but in my opinion, I think he's burn-out! I think the band is trying to evolve their music by creating a new and different sound but people seemed to be stuck to their previous hits which made their new songs quite unappreciated and unnoticed.

Whatever reasons he had, Eraserheads is undoubtedly the best Filipino band for me. Even if the other three members, Raymund, Buddy, Markus, already have their respective bands, Filipinos are still looking forward to their reunion concert. And yes, it really proved to be one of the most awaited music event of the decade when thousands of their fans gathered to witness the four guys play their unforgettable songs again. Sadly, Ely had another heart attack which put an end to the concert event. Good thing he's recovering now! well who knows, there might be another big surprise from them that will really make the fans look forward again.

No matter what happens, I can't deny that the music of the E-heads has really got into my system and contrary to their name, their songs cannot be erased in my head!
